Description: The British
Motorcycle Association (BMA) is a loosely knit group of
motorcyclists, all having an abiding interest in preserving and
riding motorcycles of British manufacture. Machines cover a wide
variety of manufactures and vintages - from as early as 1928 to
the present Triumphs, still manufactured today!
The event has been organised for the past 25 years by Thys van
Rooyen, and has drawn entrants from all over the country as well
as from beyond our borders. The 2007 event has already attracted
entries from as far afield as New Zealand and Zambia, and many
more international entrants are still expected. A total entry of
between 100 and 150 bikes is expected!
Entrants will gather at the Ashmead resort in Knysna on Friday 9
February for an informal braai and chat. On Saturday 10 they
will set off for a mass ride to Buffalo Bay where a breakfast
overlooking the Indian ocean will be enjoyed. Thereafter a
leisurely ride will be undertaken, viewing many of the great
attractions Knysna has to offer. This ride will culminate in a
display of the machinery at the Knysna Waterfront, when the
entrants will be invited to enjoy a "pint" of the delicious
locally brewed Foresters Lager - for many a first-time taste of
this truly delectable local brew!
Manufacturers such as BSA, Vincent, Velocette, Norton, Triumph,
Matchless, Ariel, AJS and others will be featured and should
provide an interesting spectacle for the public, kindling many
nostalgic recollections of a bygone era - Triumph is probably
the only British motorcycle manufacturer left in production
today.
One of the earliest entrants is a 1928 overhead camshaft
Norton.(attachment DSCN0514.JPG) but later Nortons such as the
1957 Dominator 99 (attachment DSCN0517.JPG) will also
participate.
Thereafter they will return to Ashmead Resort for the evening
dinner and entertainment.
The event generates a substantial amount of money, which always
goes to a deserving charity. This year (2007) the proceeds will
be donated to the Knysna Animal Welfare Society (KAWS), whose
good works in the area are well known.
